89 cm KATAZOME Japanese vintage fashion INDIGO fabric Stencil dyed

Gorgeous antique Japanese katazome textile dating back to Meiji era, Late 1800s. Artisan made, hand loomed cotton. Collectible!

I chose this piece for it's beautiful Crane and Turtle pattern, very auspicious symbols in Japan.

Could be recycled into many pieces, cushion covers, scarves, detail on a bag or jacket, your imagination is the limit!

*Katazome (型染め) is a Japanese method of dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a fashion stencil. With this kind of resist dyeing, a rice flour mixture is applied using a brush or a tool such as a palette knife. Pigment is added by hand-painting, immersion or both. Where the paste mixture covers and permeates the cloth, dye applied later will not penetrate.
